History of World Environment Day

World Environment Day is one of the more unique and special holidays because of its history and its many firsts. Created on the first day of the first-ever United Nations conference on human ecology, it addressed human interaction with the environment. But things didn’t happen like this right away. In 1968, Sweden was the first country to propose such a conference to the United Nations. So in 1969, the United Nations decided to hold a summit in Sweden that would concentrate on environmental issues in three years. Interestingly enough, the conference was led by Maurice Strong, a Canadian diplomat who worked in the oil and mineral industry, who also had a soft spot for the environment.

Finally, it all came together in 1972, after 4 years of preparations and $30, 000, 000 later. WED was created after international leaders convened to explore ways to increase public awareness of environmental protection. The inaugural WED was then celebrated two years later under the theme “Only One Earth.

Since then, WED has gained widespread acceptance from the public; in fact, we adore how slowly but surely it is making its way into pop culture! Celebrities from all around the world inspire others to “save the world” in their special ways. Fan favorites Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep are some of the many who constantly speak out about environmental awareness. Therefore, whether you’re a well-known actress, athlete, or college student, get your friends and spend a day outside having fun while helping to preserve this amazing world. Believe us when we say, you’ll have a blast and feel so much better afterward.

How to Observe World Environment Day

  • Make a Commitment to Recycle

Although it may seem like a simple suggestion, are you recycling wherever you can? Consider again the next time you’re considering tossing that piece of paper in the garbage since there isn’t a recycling container nearby. Holding a plastic container and too lazy to see if it’s one of the biodegradable kinds? Take a peek at it by opening your smartphone! It is everyone’s duty, including yours, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Plant a Tree

In addition to filtering airborne particles out of the atmosphere by collecting them on their leaves and bark, trees also absorb smells and polluting gases such as ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and ammonia. When positioned correctly, they can reduce the demand for summer air conditioning in a single-family home by as much as 50%. By reducing the energy demand for cooling our houses, we reduce carbon dioxide and other pollution emissions from power plants.

  • Volunteer

Volunteering is open to anyone and has the potential to improve the community as a whole. Volunteering at your local farmers’ market or with the National Park Service will force you to step outside of your comfort zone. You will experience the benefits of leaving the house and taking care of the environment, regardless of how you choose to become involved.

Why World Environment Day is Important

  • It Reconnects Us To Nature

We occasionally underestimate the extent to which natural systems contribute to our welfare. But we’re part of nature, and we depend on it. Thus, this is the ideal time to honor the important relationship by visiting the national parks in your nation.

  • It Raises Awareness

People are beginning to realize more and more that we must manage the ecosystems and resources of our planet sustainably. However, that belief is far from universal. since of this, World Environment Day is so significant as it offers a chance to spread awareness and educate friends and family about how precious and vital the physical environment is. However, make sure you fully comprehend environmental issues before you start encouraging environmental consciousness in your local neighborhood. There’s always more to learn.

  • It Encourages Us To Take Action

Toxins and pollutants from the environment have gotten worse over time, and this is bad for human health. They can cause respiratory diseases and cancer-and that’s just for starters. World Environment Day encourages us to take action and improve the environment we depend on by bringing attention to the problems with the air we breathe.

5th June 2020 Special Day

World Environment Day on June 5 is a chance to protect the planet. We are reminded to take good care of nature on this crucial day. It displays alarming statistics, such as the fact that pollution kills almost 7 million people annually. But it also gives hope that together we can solve big problems. We are motivated to make both major and small improvements on this particular day, from recycling to halting climate change. It renews our faith that people can come together for oceans, forests, and wildlife. We celebrate World Environment Day together because we envision a time when humans and the natural world coexist peacefully.
